The Business of Graphics

Monday (5/10/15) was the first of the business lectures of my Graphic Design course at Huddersfield University.

I always find that it’s all well and good to learn everything there is to know about your discipline, the practical side, the theory and everything in-between but it’s especially important to learn the business of the industry you are studying to be a part of. To be in with the major movers and shakers you need to know how the world works, what is happening in your industry and how it effects you and how you effect it.

Pete Norris, our lecture module leader, gave an over view of the course module, how it is graded etc. Then went into giving us a reality check. This consisted of looking at how many months we have lived already, how many we spend at university, how many we on average would be working and then take into account that for around half of this time you are asleep. Now that sounds dramatic and little doom and gloom but it did make a valid point. It’s important to pull your finger out and get cracking on with the projects and work at hand. To get on with separate personal projects too (good job I got this bit well and truly covered!) and to get talking to the industry.

He talked us through the design process and how being a designer in a company actually works. It was actually surprising how many parts of the company get involved with the graphic design department. This continued on to look at how long you would have to create the work and how this varies substancially to the time we get on our project at university.

Telling funny stories about design disasters and his own experiences it was a brilliant lecture. I left feeling like I knew the creative industry just a little more. With more of these lectures to come the graphic design industry better watch our for me in two years time!
